Texas Supreme Court — Chief Justice

Maggie Ellis

Candidate biography

About Maggie Ellis

I survived a childhood marked by poverty, constant moves, parent abandonment, homelessness, and interrupted schooling to become the only one of my eight siblings to graduate from college. I was a teacher and a foster mom and went to law school to help children and families who were like me and my siblings. As a lawyer, I have represented and defended people at risk of losing their liberty, their homes, and their children. As a prosecutor, I have been the voice for victims in cases ranging from sexual assault to murder.

I was previously appointed as an Administrative Law Judge, and I currently serve as a justice on the Third Court of Appeals. I have handled thousands of matters in court, and I bring tremendous legal experience to this seat. I also bring a lived understanding experienced by many who come before the courts. I am the first LGBTQ+ female to serve as an appellate justice in Texas, and if I am elected as Chief Justice, I will be the first woman ever elected to this seat.

I would be honored and grateful to earn your support and your vote.
